An advocate for Iowa's biotech business sector is the new Environmental and Public Health Ambassador for the State Hygienic Laboratory. The Hygienic Lab introduced Rachel Hurley, executive director of the Iowa Biotech Association, as its ambassador at a Sept. 26 reception held at the Lab's facility on the UI Research Park campus in Coralville. Hurley accepted the one-year honorary position to help raise awareness of the role of laboratory sciences in economic development and in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education.

The 2013 Iowa City Book Festival will begin Oct. 10 with a free community event built around the popular science book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Two members of the Lacks family will be in Iowa City that evening for a special presentation,“An Evening with the Lacks Family: The Story Behind The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” presented by Integrated DNA Technologies. It will be held at 7 p.m. in the Dean Ballroom on the lower level of the Sheraton Iowa City.

The Iowa Biotechnology Association has opened a satellite office in the BioVentures Center building at the University of Iowa Research Park in Iowa City. "Our new satellite office will allow us to have a presence in one of the state's premier research parks," stated Rachel Hurley, IBA executive director, in a press release. "The office is easily accessible and, most importantly, allows us to better serve our current members."
