BioGENEius Challenge

Overview

The Iowa BioGENEius Challenge is coordinated by IowaBio. The winner of the Iowa BioGENEius Challenge will receive travel and accommodations to compete against other regional winners at the International BioGENEius Challenge. They will also receive an IowaBio/SSTFI College Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 if they attend college in the state of Iowa and $1,000 if they attend college out of state.

Four runner-ups will also be awarded with an IowaBio/SSTFI College Scholarship in the amounts and criteria listed above.

To be considered for the Iowa BioGENEius Challenge, you must: 

  • Participate in State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa (SSTFI) (details below)
  • Perform biotechnology research, which is defined as "the use of the knowledge of biological systems to produce goods and services”
  • Conduct an individual project – team projects not accepted
  • Be an Iowa student (public, private, parochial or home-schooled) in grades 9 through 12
  • Be able to attend the International BioGENEius Challenge June 14-17 (virtually or in person TBD)
  • Follow the Rules & Guidelines and meet the International competition criteria

State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa Details

Location: Being held virtually in 2021
Judging Date: Monday, March 8th (Round 1), Monday, March 22nd (Round 2 - if needed)

The Iowa 4-H Program’s State Science + Technology Fair of Iowa (SSTFI) serves as a platform for student researchers (grades 6 – 12) to meet with professional researchers and communicate their findings and understanding of the research process. The SSTFI is an affiliate of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. The State Science + Technology Fair of Iowa is OPEN to ANY student (grades 6-12) residing in or attending school (public, private, parochial and home school) in the state of Iowa. At this time there is NO qualifier fair (local, conference, district or regional) required for participation!

International BioGENEius Challenge Details

When: June 14-17, 2021
Where: To Be Determined (may be held virtually)
